Values

Empowering Youth

The purpose of Gateways is to draw out, and respond to the needs and interests of incarcerated young men. Empowerment is achieved when these individuals recognize the knowledge base they already possess and build upon it. We believe that all youth have the potential to become valuable members of our society.

Promoting Cultural Identity

Gateways subscribes to the philosophy that when an individual is secure in their identity and proud of their own heritage they are able to be more accepting of others. Gateways promotes a deeper understanding and appreciation of all cultures as a way to combat the various forms of prejudice that are present in our society.

Youth Development

Gateways is dedicated to helping incarcerated youth develop self-esteem, achieve academic success, and increase their cultural awareness. We are committed to developing programs that address the specific needs and challenges that incarcerated youth encounter. Youth are encouraged to use their incarceration as an opportunity to gain new skills and develop as human beings.

Education

Gateways builds access to and investment in higher education as a way for incarcerated youth to increase their likelihood of post-incarceration success, therefore reducing recidivism. In recognizing the disproportionate number of young men of color incarcerated in the juvenile justice system, Gateways is committed to ensuring that young men of color at Green Hill and Maple Lane School see the value in, and have access to, a quality education.

Community Collaboration

Gateways success is built on upon the strength of our community. The collaboration between Gateways, The Evergreen State College, Washington State Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration, and countless students and volunteers has created a network of support for the incarcerated youth we serve. In order to be effective it is imperative that we continue to work together to increase the level of support and resources available to not only incarcerated youth, but to all youth.
