Dr. Tony Zaragoza
Faculty, Gateways for Incarcerated Youth
Dr. Tony Zaragoza has been involved with the Gateways College Class at The Evergreen State College since 2005. Dr. Zaragoza applies theories of popular education and participatory research by facilitating a unique classroom that includes students from Evergreen and from Green Hill and Maple Lane Schools. An educational exchange for credit between students at an institution of higher education and a correctional institution is rare and powerful and speaks to the visionary and creative thinking of Dr. Zaragoza and his students.
Dr. Zaragoza has taught the subjects of Political Economy (esp. Political Economy of Racism), Chicana/o Studies, Popular Education, Social Movements, Labor History, Technology Studies (esp. Labor Replacement), History and Political Economy of the Northwest, Radio Production, Independent Media at Evergreen.
Dr. Zaragoza is a native of Indiana and earned his bachelors of English and Philosophy at Indiana University and earned his Masters and Doctorate in American Studies at Washington State University.
Samantha Franks
Challenge Partner Coordinator, Gateways for Incarcerated Youth
Samantha Franks leads the Gateways Challenge Program and is the Gateways Retention Project staff member. Recruiting, retaining and training college students and community volunteers to work with incarcerated youth is part of her work. Franks also leads fundraising and community relations programs for Gateways.
Franks earned her bachelors degree in Political Science and Fine Arts at The Evergreen State College and enjoys arts, music and dedicating her time to supporting programs that focus on improving the lives of youth in juvenile justice systems and alternative homes.
Emily Sladek
Cultural Evenings Program Coordinator, Gateways for Incarcerated Youth
Emily Sladek is the Culture Evening Program Coordinator. Emily's work includes scheduling artists/speakers to perform at Maple Lane and Green Hill Schools . She is a liaison between Gateways, the schools and the artists and books a minimum of 24 performances per year. She is a senior member of the Gateways team and has volunteered in many meaningful capacities during her time at Gateways.
Jeannette Garceau
On-Line College Class Instructor/Facilitator, Gateways for Incarcerated Youth
Jeannette Garceau. Study Leader for on-line classes through Grays Harbor College Bridge Program. She has an MA in rhetoric and composition from Washington State University , and extensive experience teaching and working with students. Previous work includes establishing Gateways Challenge Program. She sees Gateways work to support and encourage education as part of larger struggles for social justice and equity, and is honored to be part of that work.
